State Government Gives Double Boost To Gold Coast In Fight Against Domestic Violence
It has been revealed the Government is awarding over $40,000 to fund training workshops run by the Gold Coast Centre Against Sexual Violence, but family law experts claim more needs to be done.
Family lawyer Michael Kilmartin from Adams Wilson Lawyers believes the Gold Coast needs a permanent judge for daily sittings of the Federal Circuit Court to deal with custody battles and property disputes, which currently only has a two day sitting in Southport every two months.
“The logical approach would be to have a Gold Coast judge who can determine the Commonwealth Law and service Gold Coast and Tweed,” Michael said.
This is only part of a much bigger picture though, and he says there are a lot of changes that would need to occur to aid in the fight against domestic violence.
“A court system needs to be linked with a great police system, needs to be linked with a great preventive education program and needs to be linked with community awareness.”
